Carl Valentine Lachmund was born in Booneville, Missouri on March 27, 1853 and died in Yonkers, New York on February 20, 1928. In 1867 he went to Germany to study piano at the Cologne Conservatory, where he remained until 1871. There he studied with Heller, Gernsheim, Jensen, and Seiss, and also violin with Japha.
